A Flake Like Mike - The Windows

A Flake Like Mike is a limited-edition hardcover children's book for luxury department store Saks Fifth Avenue published by Harper Collins for the 2008 holiday season. Capuozzo illustrated the book using his signature collage style. The illustrations create a playful world reflecting the vibrant energy of the book's New York City setting.

Written by Simpsons writer Mike Reiss, the story follows a snowflake named Mike who is rejected by other snowflakes for being different. The feel-good story is about finding one's own individual identity.

This project was complex, with many people working together to produce the windows. The process has been likened to putting on a Broadway show. When I started the illustrations for the book, Sak's asked me to incorporate Marion Bantjes' snowflake illustrations from their holiday branding. Even though I didn't personally work with Marion, it was great fun transforming her snowflakes into characters that fit into my illustration style. They made a great addition to the array of different characters that live in the book. There are other contributors to this project that should be mentioned - Terron Schaeffer: Senior Vice President of Marketing at Saks, Tim Wisgerhoff: creative director for visual merchandising for Saks Fifth Avenue, Andrea Rosen and Kathleen Burchell from Harper Collins, the team at Spaeth design who fabricate the windows headed up by Senior Designer Nico Lopez, and Mark Marek who animated the shorts installed in the windows.
