Terry Johnson A.K.A. King Terry From Japan

King Terry.jpg

While organizing the Intergalactico archives this week, this small booklet with a King Terry cover popped up and inspired this post. Along with Gary Panter, King Terry is known as one of the originators of the "ratty line" style of art. I first saw his work published in the "Tokyo Raw" section of Raw Magazine #7. I was immediately impacted by the primal energy of his art. He calls it "Heta-uma" which is translated as "Bad-nice" and it describes the powerful ability of "naive" or "untrained" art to be able to deeply move a viewer.

Flamingo Studio is Terry's design company.

Terry's 591 page masterwork is at Picture Box Inc.

Here's a few more images. These are from a 2007 book called "Beach Paradise":

Too funny. I totally pulled out the Beach Paradise book to dig through after your Takeshi post. And now you have upped the escalator! I totally had to find my old stash of Weekly Comication mags and issue 55 of the Japanese Illustration magazine with the comics special that has an awesome Booga and Gabe strip in it as well as many other gems by artists who'd probably be familiar to anyone who has that old Raw. So much good stufff. An unknown classic sampler I stumbled on by chance. I'll try to post some scans later.

OK. You made me do it. More of the similar of that time and now and neither is to be found with illustrative samples at: http://wowcool.com/engine/2008/09/22/the-japanese-ratty-line-continued/

Amazing photos, in fact I think those are some of the clearest photos I’ve seen yet of any space walk related images.

On another note: the Hubble has gone quite far past its expected life hasn’t it? Actually hasn’t alot of NASA equipment including the Mars Rover http://www.frogmix.com/search/Mars+Rover and the Space Shuttle?

Again those are some marvelous photos.

It's a Japanese import they've stocked at least a couple of times (so they may get more in the future. The cover is red w/ a yellow belly band. They have translated the title as "Bad N Nice." You can read about an earlier version of the book in the King Terry interview in Schodt's "Dreamland Japan." Good luck!
